THE GLOBAL ORGANIC TEXTILE STANDARD

person Posted By: DIWU list In: DIWU blog

The Global Organic Textile Standard, in short GOTS, is the most restrictive ecological certificate available in the textile industry. Its main assumption is a change of thinking when it comes to production in the fashion industry and consumption of textiles.

Sustainability so much abused nowadays must have its framework, and the GOTS certification designates, controls and improves it. Organic fibres play many roles in creating the industry, but it is thanks to this standard that it reduces its impact on the environment as well as prioritizes human health over short-term profits. The GOTS certification is not a standard that everyone can have. The GOTS certificate is the only standard that sets several goals that are sometimes very difficult to achieve. If a given producer is not able to adapt to these rules and does not change his machine park, the type of chemicals used, he will not care for the welfare of his employees, and even more so for environmental aspects such as saving water and energy, he will not be able to obtain such a certificate. The GOTS certificate is the certainty of meeting the social, economic and, most importantly, environmental aspect https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/xhQiGhnbDqw

The GOTS certificate covers the entire supply chain, from crops to direct sales. The supply chain is very long, it starts with the cultivation of cotton, for which the use of synthetic pesticides, insecticides, herbicides and GMOs (genetically modified organisms) is prohibited, which are following the principles of organic farming. What is organic farming? It is a production process whose main goal is to maintain the health of the soil and human ecosystems. The next stages of cotton production are spinning mills, knitted and fabric producers, finishing factories which include dye-houses, laundries, sewing rooms, screen printing, printing houses, manufacturers of accessories, threads, distributors, wholesalers, and clothing brands. Products that can be covered by the GOTS certificate must contain at least 70% of certified organic fibres, and a product with an organic label must contain at least 95% of certified organic fibres. The production process is an exception sock, leggings and sportswear where synthetic fibre can be used in the amount of up to 25%.

The DIWU platform offers products that meet 100% of the GOTS standard because all products offered in our store are certified, and the personalization that takes place is made in the KNK KANAKA. In the laundry and dyeing which is also GOTS certified. Soon, we will launch the possibility of making prints also with the GOTS certificate. The entire supply chain is transparent, safe for consumers and, most importantly, for the environment.
